Set it up in Timely
About 20 minutes to set up. Timely doesn’t connect to your bank or hold any money: the planner above does the sums, and Timely makes sure payday, every bill and every savings transfer turns up on the right day.
1. Three lists
In the sidebar, click + beside Lists and add Budget, Bills and Savings. In Quick Add, ~Bills files a task into Bills, and so on.
2. Your month on one page
In the planner’s Budget sheet, give each category a type (Needs, Wants or Savings) and what you plan to spend in a month. Last month’s bank statement is the easiest place to start. As the month goes on, fill in Spent; Left and the totals at the bottom work themselves out, here and in the Excel download.
Type amounts the way you write them, with your currency: $1,200, €85 or 450 lei. Use the same currency throughout one sheet so the totals add up.
3. Payday
| You type | Timely sets |
Payday: Salary ($2,400) every month on the 25th ~Budget | The 25th of every month |
Payday: Freelance (€450) every 2 weeks starting Nov 13 ~Budget | Every other Friday from 13 November |
Payday: Tips ($120) every Fri ~Budget | Every Friday |
Payday is the moment to pay yourself first: do the savings transfers in step 6 the same day, before the money gets spent.
4. Bills before they’re due
| You type | Timely sets |
Pay rent ($1,200) every month on the 1st ~Bills | The 1st of every month |
Pay water bill (€60) every 3 months starting Dec 10 ~Bills | Every three months from 10 December |
Pay car insurance (£480) every year on Mar 3 ~Bills | Every 3 March |
Netflix autopay ($15.49) every month on the 3rd ~Bills | The 3rd of every month, a prompt to check the charge |
Open a bill and add a reminder such as 1 day before. Tick it off once it’s paid and it moves to its next date.
Keep account and card numbers out of Timely. The bill’s name and amount are all the plan needs.
5. Debts
Two lines per debt: the monthly payment, and the date you want it gone.
Pay credit card (minimum $150) every month on the 20th ~Bills
Pay off credit card ($2,300 left) due Dec 31, 2027 !high ~Savings
The pay-off task has a deadline, so Countdowns shows the days left. Each month, open it and update the amount left in its title.
6. Savings goals
| You type | Timely sets |
Save for Holiday ($1,500) due Jun 30, 2027 ~Savings | A deadline of 30 June 2027 |
Move $150 to Holiday savings every month on the 26th ~Savings | The 26th of every month, the day after payday |
Move $50 to Emergency fund every Fri ~Savings | Every Friday |
The planner’s Savings goals sheet shows how much is still to save for each one. Put the transfer on payday or the day after, so it happens before the month’s spending.
7. A weekly money check
Add Check spending every Sun at 7pm for 15 min ~Budget. Fill in Spent in the planner from your banking app, and look at what’s coming up. Once a month, plan the next one: Set next month’s budget every month on the 28th at 8pm for 30 min ~Budget.
For one view of everything money-related this week, make a Smart Filter: All conditions, list is Bills or Savings, and planned date or deadline in the next 7 days.
This is a way to organise your own budget, not financial advice. For decisions about debt, savings or investments, talk to a qualified adviser.
